Moving to Australia With a Pet

Australia has some of the strictest pet import rules in the world — and for good reason. As an island nation free of rabies and several other diseases common elsewhere, Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) takes biosecurity seriously, and that means every incoming pet goes through a defined process before it's allowed to join its family at home.

If you're one of our clients planning a move to Australia with a dog or cat, this is the process you're working with — and why starting early matters more here than with almost any other destination.

Why Australia's Rules Are So Strict

Unlike most countries, Australia isn't just checking vaccination records at the border. Every pet entering the country is assessed as a potential biosecurity risk, and the government's approach reflects that: extensive pre-export testing, a mandatory post-arrival quarantine period, and very little flexibility on timelines. There's no way to expedite or shortcut the process once it's underway, which is part of why professional guidance matters so much for this particular move.

The Basic Timeline

A pet relocation to Australia typically unfolds over several months, not weeks. In broad strokes:

  1. Microchipping and rabies vaccination, done well in advance of any testing.

  2. Identity Verification, completed at 2 different veterinary practices to shorten the quarantine time. It must be completed before the rabies antibody titer test.

  3. A rabies neutralizing antibody (RNATT) blood test, which has to be drawn a set number of days after vaccination and then sent to an approved laboratory. The results start a mandatory waiting period before a pet is even eligible to travel.

  4. Additional treatments and tests closer to travel, including parasite treatments and other veterinary checks within a specific pre-export window.

  5. An import permit application, submitted to Australian authorities before travel is booked.

  6. Mandatory post-arrival quarantine, which for pets coming from the US currently takes place at the government-run facility in Mickleham, near Melbourne.

Missing any single deadline in that sequence can mean restarting parts of the process, so the further out you plan, the more room you have to absorb delays.

What Happens at Mickleham

The quarantine stay is the part of the process most pet owners have questions about — understandably, since it's the piece that happens without them present. Pets arriving from the US typically spend a minimum of 10 days at the Mickleham facility before being released to their owners, though the exact length depends on the pet's paperwork and health status on arrival.

During that stay, pets are housed, fed, and monitored by government-contracted staff, not by the family. It's a secure, regulated environment, but it's still an adjustment — both for the pet and for the owners waiting on the other side. Understanding what the facility does and doesn't allow (visits, updates, transfer logistics after release) ahead of time makes the wait considerably less stressful. Starwood Pet Travel has put together a detailed breakdown of what to expect at Mickleham, including how the facility operates and what happens once a pet is cleared for release.

Where Most Delays Come From

In our experience advising clients on international moves, Australia relocation delays almost always trace back to one of three things:

  • The rabies antibody titer blood test being drawn too early or too late relative to the required waiting period.

  • Underestimating how far in advance the process needs to start — this isn't a move you can plan two months out.

  • Import permit timing not lining up with the actual booked travel date.

None of these are complicated problems on their own. They just require someone tracking the calendar closely, months before departure, and adjusting as paperwork comes back from labs and government offices.

Why We Point Clients to a Specialist for This Move

Australia is a case where we actively encourage clients to work with a relocation specialist rather than trying to coordinate the process themselves. The sequencing is rigid, the paperwork has to be exactly right, and a missed window can add weeks or months to a move that's already on a tight timeline.

Starwood Pet Travel has extensive experience specifically with pet relocation to Australia, including the Mickleham quarantine process, and has laid out the requirements in detail for families navigating this move from the US. Their complete guide to pet relocation from the USA to Australia walks through the full timeline step by step, and their Australia relocation page covers the services they offer for this specific corridor.

Our Advice, in Short

If Australia is on your horizon:

  • Start the conversation with a vet and a relocation specialist as early as possible — ideally 6+ months before your target move date.

  • Get the FAVN blood test timing right the first time; it's the step most likely to add months if it's off.

  • Plan for the Mickleham quarantine stay as a real part of your moving timeline, not an afterthought — factor it into housing, travel, and family logistics on the other end.

  • Work with a relocation partner who has specific, current experience with Australian import requirements, since the rules are detailed and do change.

Australia is one of the more involved pet relocations we help clients think through, but it's also one of the most well-documented — the process is exacting, but it is predictable if you follow it correctly. With the right timeline and the right guidance, it's absolutely manageable.
